The
SMS Nassau
was the first dreadnought-type battleship built by the Imperial German Navy, in response to the launch of the British battleship HMS Dreadnought in 1906.
The Nassau was laid down on July 22, 1907 at the Howaldtswerke shipyard in Kiel, and launched on March 7, 1908. He was the seed of the Nassau-class made up of four battleships.
Nassau and her twins took part in the Battle of Jutland between May 31 and June 1, 1916, as part of the First Combat Squad. The Nassau fired its 280 mm guns 106 times and was hit by two 101 mm (4 ”) guns. During the battle, the Nassau collided with the HMS Spitfire. Nassau suffered a total of 11 killed and 16 wounded during the battle.
At the end of World War I, the ship was handed over to the winning powers as spoils of war. The SMS Nassau was delivered to Japan in 1920, who decided not to use it and sell it to a British scrapping company, which scrapped it in Dordrecht, the Netherlands.
