Story behind this  clarinet and others I am selling:
These clarinets belonged to Dr. Verner Herman and his musician father, Professor John Herman. Dr. Herman, born in 1915, was trained as a classical clarinetist first by his father, then by a series of master teachers. Her majored in music at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, then attended dental school at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Herman practiced dentistry until the 1970s while maintaining an active musical career in the Sioux City and later Kennewick, Washington areas. He was a life-long member of the Monahan Post Band under Director Leo Kucinski, playing weekly during the summer at the  famed Sioux City Bandshell in Grandview Park, at Riverside Park, and during holiday fundraisers. He contributed his skills during community events and as a featured soloist during morning worship services. He played his clarinet into his 80s.
Professor John Herman was born in Lapland, Sweden and immigrated with his family to Oakland Nebraska when he was 11. His three passions in life were music, fishing, and Shakespeare. His mother, who ran the local bakery and hotel for travelers and hired hands, supported his desire to study music at Bethany College in Lindsborgh, Kansas. For his studies he focused on clarinet, oboe, piano, and organ. Upon graduation, he continued his study of music in Chicago under pianist Victor Ganz. Trained to be a concert pianist, Professor Herman's performing career was derailed by the 1919 flu epidemic that left him with damaged lungs and coughing spasms. After serving as band director at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, he dedicated his life to teaching and became a much sought-after teacher of piano, clarinet, oboe, and organ in Sioux City, Iowa. He was organist at Augustana Lutheran Church for 40+ years and a member of numerous local music organizations, including the Monahan Post Band. Once asked to describe his life, he shared, “Music has been my hobby and my profession.” When he was no longer teaching or playing the clarinet, he gave the clarinet to his son, Dr. Verner Herman, who used the clarinet as a second clarinet in his own musical career.
