    Description

Up for sale is a set of Herbert Wurlitzer Bb and A Reform-Boehm clarinets formerly belonging to San Francisco Symphony clarinetist Rudolph Schmitt (1899-1993). This set is one of the first set of Herbert Wurlitzer Reform-Boehm clarinets made, with a makers stamp that closely resembles the Fritz Wurlitzer shop and still lists the city of manufacture as Bubenreuth, putting the date of manufacture between 1959 and 1961. In my correspondence with Bernd Wurlitzer, he has agreed that the date of manufacture would be between those years, before the relocation of the Herbert Wurlitzer factory to Neustadt/Aisch and the subsequent redesign of the makers stamp.
These clarinets have been fully restored and re-padded by the New York Clarinet Workshop, and the wood has been expertly maintained with no cracks or chips. The bores of both instruments are still incredibly smooth and there is no loss of motion in the mechanism or looseness in the socket rings. The keywork has been well maintained and oiled. In short, both instruments are ready to go. As these are older Wurlitzer instruments, the E/F correction key on the bell had not been developed and adapted for Reform-Boehm instruments, and as such, these instruments feature the tuning hole in the bell. It appears at one point that the A clarinet bell was remade post-1961 as it features the newer Neustadt-Aisch stamp, though still with a hole in the bell.
I originally purchased this set as a second set of Herbert Wurlitzer instruments to serve as a backup to my primary set from the grandson of Rudolph Schmitt who kept these instruments in his possession following the passing of Mr. Schmitt in 1993. I have used these instruments on several remote recordings throughout the pandemic and find them to be excellent instruments, as stable and fluid as my primary set from the 1986. As I am in the process of moving and downsizing my collection, I am offering these up for sale. For players and collectors interested in the history of the San Francisco Symphony, or for players looking to move to the Reform-Boehm system, these are the instruments for you.
